Pensacola has been nicknamed “The City of Five Flags” because, through the centuries since its original establishment in 1559, it has been ruled by the British, the Spanish, the French, the Confederacy, and finally, the United States. Due to this very fact, Pensacola is rich in history, including the Civil War. As with everywhere in Florida, the weather is usually mild and warm and it’s surrounded by beaches and wildlife sanctuaries.
Pensacola is also known as the birthplace of Naval aviation and is home to the Naval Air Station at Pensacola, established in 1914. Thanks to this designation, it is also home to the National Aviation Museum and the famous fliers, the Blue Angels. The Naval Aviation Museum allows hands-on experiences with most of the crafts on display which is a definite step up from the usual “look but don’t touch” approach of most museums. For information, call 1-800-327-5002.
In addition to the rich aviation history of the area, Pensacola is home to a quaint little place called Historic Pensacola Village. The village is a myriad of original 19th century buildings that still stand and function. There are guided walking tours through the village and they also have people on-hand to help you plan your very own tours! For more information on this wonderfully preserved 19th century town, contact the Tivoli High House Store at (850)595-5993, or the administrative office at (850)595-5985.
Pensacola also offers a whole different type of learning activities through the wildlife-full and pristine nature preserves around the area. The Great Florida Birding Trail begins in Pensacola. The birding trail is home to at least 30 different species of birds, including our great national bird, the bald eagle. With so many types of birds in one place, you are just bound to see something magnificent! There is also a preserve called Tarklin Bayou Preserve where great care is taken of many species of endangered flora that is native to the area. You might even get lucky enough to see something amazing just by sitting on the beach and enjoying yourself. Four different species of sea turtle come to Pensacola beaches every summer to lay their eggs. Dolphins can be seen frolicking right off the coast also. And, if you time it just right, you may get to watch part of the annual migration of the monarch butterflies!
