Gulf Breeze is a tiny little town with a population of 6000 that lies at the very edge of Fairpoint Peninsula in Santa Rosa County, Florida. The city’s mission statement is to “preserve and enhance its hometown character and natural environment to foster a high quality of family life.” (http://cityofgulfbreeze.us/)The city’s commitment to their mission statement is evident in their stable local government that is well-recognized for its achievements in financial programs. It is also obvious in their school system. There are three schools in Gulf Breeze- elementary, middle, and high schools- all located quite conveniently right next door to one another. All schools achieve excellence in academic achievement as well as athletic achievement regularly.
The second part of their mission statement, referring to the surrounding natural environment, is also evident. It shows in the 18 miles of waterfront and 3 protected bayous that surround Gulf Breeze and in the Naval Live Oaks Reservation.
The Naval Live Oaks Reservation has the honor of being the home to America’s first experimental tree farm. This tree farm spans over 1000 acres and was first established by President John Quincy Adams in the year 1828. What a wonderful treasure to be able to preserve!
Gulf Breeze is also home to a rather unique zoo called Gulf Breeze Zoo. The zoo spans 50 acres and shelters approximately 1000 different species from around the world, including giraffes, ostrich, as well as many others. It was founded by a man named Pat Quinn in 1984. Mr. Quinn’s accomplishments also include founding the Lion Country Safari in San Diego, CA and he helped found the Northwest Florida Zoological Society.3 While all of these tidbits are very interesting, they are not what makes the Gulf Breeze Zoo so unique. There is a raised boardwalk that provides a unique perspective on herds of deer and wildebeests and other animals but, the really neat part is that the boardwalk also serves as a look-out point from which you can see gorillas and chimpanzees roaming free on near-by islands! For more information about the Gulf Breeze Zoo, contact them at www.gulfbreezezoo.org or call them at (850)932-2229.
Thanks to the surrounding natural environment in Gulf Breeze, it is an exceptional location for fostering reverence for the beautiful, wonderful natural world that we are all a part of!
